Pop star Miley Cyrus recently talked about the limits she faced after she left Disney, especially how she wasn’t allowed to perform songs from her famous show, Hannah Montana. This was surprising because her face and voice are connected to those songs.
On The Ringer podcast, the 32-year-old singer shared how hard it was emotionally to be stopped from singing music that helped start her career.
“After I left Disney, I wasn’t allowed to perform any of the Hannah Montana music,” she said.
“It’s not like I wanted to, performing The Best of Both Worlds between We Can’t Stop and Wrecking Ball wouldn’t have really made sense. But it was still sad knowing those songs have my voice, my face, and I wasn’t allowed to sing them.”
Miley became famous from 2006 to 2011 by starring in Hannah Montana, a Disney Channel show about a teenager living a double life as a regular girl and a pop star. The show was very popular and made Miley a well-known teen idol.
Though Miley has since built a strong music career on her own, she said it was hard that she couldn’t use Hannah Montana songs for many years.
Things changed last year when Disney officially honoured her work. In 2024, she received the Disney Legend award at the D23 Expo, which is given to people who have made a big impact on the company.
“It was pretty cool,” Miley said about finally being able to look back at her early career after getting the award.
Right now, Miley is preparing to release her latest project, Something Beautiful. This is a 55-minute visual album that will show in theaters worldwide starting June 27, and in the U.S. from June 12. It includes 13 songs and is her biggest creative project so far.
