The Taj Mahal in Agra generated the highest revenue from ticket sales among all monuments under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) over the last five fiscal years — from 2019-2020 to 2023-2024.
This was shared in Rajya Sabha by Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who replied to a question on how much ASI earned from ticket sales at various monuments every year.
Taj Mahal tops each year
The Taj Mahal, as per data from the government, has topped the list in terms of revenue each year for the past period. The elegant white marble building, constructed by Emperor Shah Jehan in the 17th century, is famous globally due to its excellent design and heritage.
Other best monuments in the past
The statistics also showed which other monuments received strong ticket sales:
In 2019-20, the Agra Fort (also in Agra) was second, and Qutub Minar in Delhi was third.
In 2020-21, the Group of Monuments at Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu was second, and the Sun Temple in Konark was next.
In the latest year, 2023-24, Qutub Minar was second again, and the Red Fort in Delhi was third.
The minister presented the revenue information in tabular form, demonstrating the revenue generated from ticketing each year for various monuments. It contained year-wise and monument-wise information.
This indicates how popular the Taj Mahal is still with visitors from India and all over the globe.
