Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned three advanced naval ships which include INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. This is a significant milestone for India, showcasing the country's progress in building its defence technology. These ships will strengthen the Indian Navy’s capabilities and play a key role in protecting the nation's maritime interests.
INS Nilgiri is the first ship of the P17A Stealth Frigate Project, designed by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau. It boasts advanced features for improved survivability, seakeeping, and stealth, as highlighted by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).
INS Surat, on the other hand, is the fourth and final ship of the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project. It is one of the largest and most sophisticated destroyers in the world. With 75 per cent indigenous content, it is equipped with advanced weapon-sensor systems and cutting-edge network-centric capabilities, further strengthening India's naval defence.
INS Vaghsheer is the sixth and final submarine of the P75 Scorpene Project, showcasing India’s growing expertise in submarine manufacturing. Built-in collaboration with France's Naval Group, this submarine adds to the country's strong naval defence.
Prime Minister Modi celebrated the fact that all three combatants are proudly "Made in India." He pointed out that India is emerging as a powerful maritime force globally.
Referring to the event as a "very big day" for the nation's maritime heritage, PM Modi also honoured the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, recognizing his pioneering vision for India’s navy.
What PM Modi said
“Today is a big day for India’s maritime history, the Navy, and the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan," said Prime Minister Modi. He reminded everyone of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s role in strengthening the Indian Navy. "On his land, we are taking a major step to strengthen our Navy for the 21st century. This is the first time that a destroyer, a frigate, and a submarine are being commissioned together," he added.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also praised the commissioning of the Naval ships, calling it a clear sign of India’s growing power in the Indian Ocean region. “This historic moment is not only a milestone for the Indian Navy but also a reflection of India’s strengthening presence in the Indian Ocean Region," he said.
He further said, “The Indian Ocean has always been strategically and economically important, but its role has become even more significant in today’s fast-changing world. The importance that the Atlantic Ocean once held is now shifting to the Indian Ocean."
