India is preparing to deploy its own indigenous integrated air defence system to protect the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR) from aerial threats such as enemy missiles, fighter jets, and drones. This move marks a major step towards strengthening the country’s air security using homegrown technology.

According to senior defence officials who spoke to ANI, the new multilayered system, called the Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS), will be built around Indian-made missile systems like the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) and Very Short Range Air Defence Systems (VSHORADS). These systems will work together with radars, command units and other equipment to provide a strong defensive shield over Delhi.

The plan comes at a time when India is upgrading its defence preparedness, especially after Pakistan reportedly attempted to target the country during Operation Sindoor in May this year. Earlier, India had considered buying the American-made NASAMS-II system, which is used to protect Washington DC and the White House. Talks between the two countries had even begun, but the Indian government did not proceed because the US quoted a very high price.

Now, India aims to rely more on its own defence capabilities. The IADWS will be managed by the Indian Air Force, which is responsible for protecting key locations in the national capital. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will work closely with various production agencies to build the system’s network, communication, and command-and-control setup. Sources say that many complex systems are needed to build such an advanced defence shield, and the DRDO is already equipped to handle these requirements.

Over the years, DRDO has developed several air defence technologies, including the QRSAM and Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missiles (MRSAM). It is also working on a long-range missile under Project Kusha, which will further enhance India’s air defence power.

At the same time, India is waiting for the delivery of two remaining squadrons of the S-400 Sudarshan air defence system from Russia. The country is also considering a Russian proposal to buy more S-400 units along with the advanced S-500 system, which is one of the most powerful air defence systems in the world.
