What is Dronaam?

India’s defense capabilities have been significantly enhanced with the deployment of the Dronaam counter-drone system, developed by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) in collaboration with Gurutvaa Systems Pvt Ltd. This system is designed to detect, track, and neutralize rogue drones, which have become a growing threat, particularly along India's borders.

Key Features of Dronaam:

  • Detection: Equipped with radar that can identify drones from several kilometers away.

  • Tracking: Utilizes electro-optical and infrared sensors for real-time monitoring of drone activity.

  • Neutralization: Employs RF (radio frequency) jammers to disrupt drones' communication and GPS, effectively rendering them non-operational.

Impact on Border Security

Dronaam has been instrumental in securing India’s borders, especially the sensitive India-Pakistan border in Punjab, where over 260 drones were intercepted this year, a sharp rise from 110 in 2023. The system’s effectiveness was highlighted by Amit Shah, who noted that the laser-equipped, gun-mounted anti-drone technology has significantly improved detection and neutralization rates, raising the success rate from 3% to 55%.

Amit Shah’s address

During the 60th Raising Day celebrations of the Border Security Force (BSF), Amit Shah emphasized the progress of India's Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS), which is still evolving. While the system has seen positive results along Assam's riverine border, further improvements are required.

India is also actively developing more advanced systems to combat drone threats, given the escalating nature of the problem. Mr. Shah mentioned that a "whole of government" approach is being implemented, with collaboration from the DRDO and other defense agencies to further enhance border security.

The BSF’s Role

The BSF, which has about 2.65 lakh personnel, plays a crucial role in securing over 6,300 km of India’s borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. Mr. Shah praised the BSF's dedication, noting that the system has contributed greatly to ensuring India's security.

Under the leadership of Amit Shah, the government has allocated substantial funds to improve border security, with new fencing, infrastructure, roads, and 573 new border posts. Additionally, 1,812 km of new roads have been constructed to enhance the mobility of security forces.

The increasing use of drones for illicit activities, such as transporting weapons and drugs, poses a serious challenge to national security. However, the BSF and other agencies, supported by the government's forward-looking initiatives, continue to address these threats head-on.

As the drone menace grows, deploying systems like Dronaam is vital in securing India’s borders and infrastructure.

As India aims for global recognition by 2047, the contributions of security personnel like the BSF jawans will be pivotal in achieving the nation's goals.
