A former fifth-grade teacher in New Jersey has been arrested and charged with sexual abuse of a 13-year-old boy. Laura Caron, who taught at an elementary school in the county, is accused of having an "inappropriate sexual relationship" with one of her former students.

The alleged abuse happened between 2016 and 2020 while the student, then, lived in Caron's home. The student and his family had developed a close relationship with Caron after she taught him and his siblings in fifth grade. The family reportedly allowed their children to spend time at Caron's residence, which eventually led to the student and his siblings living there permanently in 2016.

The Cape May County Prosecutor's Office released a statement detailing the charges against Caron. The investigation was triggered by a Facebook post in December, where the student's father noticed striking similarities between Caron's child and his son.

The student's sister also provided crucial information to investigators, claiming she witnessed her brother sleeping in Caron's bed after she had put them both to sleep in the same room. The sister alleged that this pattern began when her brother was just 11 years old. At the time of the child's birth in 2019, the student was 13 years old, and Caron was 28.

The victim, now aged 19-20, confessed to investigators the sexual relationship he had with his former teacher, Caron. He also revealed he is the father of her child. The two continued to have contact until the victim's father observed similarities in a Facebook post.

Caron was taken into custody on Wednesday and is now facing serious charges: aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child. She remains incarcerated at the Cape May County Correctional Facility pending her first court hearing.
