A 29-year-old KV teacher committed suicide by hanging in Indirapuram, Ghaziabad, in the afternoon yesterday. According to reports, Anvita Sharma was harassed by her husband and in-laws, leading to the extreme action.
The accident happened at about 1:30 PM when her husband, Gaurav Kaushik, a working doctor, and her son were away from home. Anvita's last message to her parents and brother was about the emotions she was experiencing. She requested them to look after her son, stating, "I don't want him to become like his father." reported TOI
In her note, Anvita spoke in anger about how she was treated by her husband and in-laws. She stated,
“He married my job, not me. My husband wanted a beautiful, hardworking wife who also had a job. I did everything I could, but it was never enough. They wanted someone who would only focus on the in-laws, but my parents and brother were equally important to me.” quoted by TOI.
Anvita also explained that her husband always found fault in her and used to taunt her for the last five years. She said that her in-laws treated her like a "working maid" and that her husband managed her money, even her checkbook and bank account.
She concluded her message with a message to her husband, stating, "I have prepared food, Gaurav Kaushik, please eat it."
Anvita's family got anxious upon receiving her message and called her immediately, but she did not take calls. They told her husband, Kaushik, who came home and found the door locked from within. Kaushik and others smashed the window grill to enter, where they found Anvita.
ACP Abhishek Srivastava of Indirapuram Police stated as quoted by TOI, “On receiving her message, her family immediately tried to contact Anvita, but their calls went unanswered. They informed Kaushik, who returned home but found the door locked from inside. They cut open the window grille to enter the house.”
Anvita's father, Anil Sharma, lodged a police complaint against Kaushik and his family members for harassment and dowry demands. He alleged that he had paid Rs 26 lakh as dowry for the marriage, along with a blue Dzire car.
He claimed that soon after the wedding, Kaushik, his father Surendra Sharma, and his mother Manju started harassing Anvita for additional dowry. He said that they took Anvita's salary, checkbook, and ATM cards, and physically and verbally assaulted her when she requested them.
According to the TOI report, police have booked a case under:
Section 85 – Cruelty by husband or his relatives towards a woman
Section 80(2) – Punishment for dowry death
Section 115(2) – Voluntarily causing hurt
Section 352 – Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace
Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961
Anvita's father, Kaushik, and his father have been apprehended, while Manju, his mother, is on the run.
Anvita's father claimed that his daughter was tortured physically and mentally by her in-laws and husband. He said that on March 16, Anvita was subjected to severe harassment, which forced her to pen down a suicide note and end her life.
Sharma added, “Shortly after the wedding, her husband, father-in-law, and mother-in-law began to physically and mentally harass her, demanding more dowry. My daughter worked as a teacher at KV Dallupura. They kept her entire salary, checkbook, and ATM cards under their illegal possession. When she asked for them, they would physically assault and verbally abuse her.” quoted by TOI
The investigation is ongoing, and police are working to track down Manju.
