A dangerous criminal once feared across three states is finally back behind bars. Delhi Police have arrested 67-year-old Devender Sharma, also known as ‘Doctor Death’, after he went missing while out on parole in 2023. Here's a simple breakdown of this chilling case.
Sharma was caught at an ashram in Dausa, Rajasthan, where he was pretending to be a priest under a fake name. Police found him a day before the arrest was officially announced.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Aditya Gautam, Sharma had been out on parole from Tihar Jail and never returned. He was serving time for several murders.
Sharma once held a degree in Ayurvedic medicine (BAMS – Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery). But instead of healing people, he turned to crime.
He was involved in the killing of taxi and truck drivers between 2002 and 2004. Along with his accomplices, he would invite drivers for fake trips, murder them, sell their vehicles, and get rid of their bodies in the most horrifying way.
To destroy evidence, Sharma and his gang threw the victims' bodies into the Hazara Canal in Uttar Pradesh, a place known to be filled with crocodiles.
“Sharma and his accomplices used to call drivers for fake trips, murder them and sell their vehicles in the grey market,” said DCP Aditya Gautam.
This method helped him stay under the radar for years.
Sharma has been convicted in seven different murder cases across Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan. In one case in Gurgaon, he was even given the death penalty.
At the time of his arrest, he was serving a life sentence in Tihar Jail, India’s most high-security prison.
Now that Devender Sharma has been caught, the legal system will continue its process. He will likely face additional charges for breaking parole and hiding his identity.
