A shocking incident happened at Nashik's district hospital where a five-day-old baby was stolen from a new mother who had recently given birth. The police acted quickly, arresting the woman responsible for the crime and safely returning the baby to its mother. However, the investigation uncovered a disturbing motive behind the theft.
Suman Khan, a resident of Satana taluka, had undergone a cesarean section at the District Government Hospital in Nashik. After giving birth, she remained hospitalized for further care. During her stay, Sapna Marathe, an MBA graduate, struck up a friendship with Khan. Marathe gained Khan's trust by falsely claiming to have relatives working at the hospital.
On the day Suman Khan was set to be discharged, her husband, Abdul Khan, had gone to collect the reports. It was then that Marathe approached Khan and, under the pretence of helping her, said, “You come from behind, your stitches will hurt, I will take your baby.”
Taking advantage of the situation, Marathe fled the hospital with the infant. When Khan and her husband discovered that both the baby and Marathe were missing, they quickly alerted the hospital authorities and reported the abduction.
Abdul Khan filed a report of his missing baby at the Sarkarwada police station. Realizing how serious the situation was, Police Commissioner Sandeep Karnik sent out several teams to help. In just 12 hours, the police found the baby and returned it to the mother. However, the district hospital tried to avoid blame, saying the baby was stolen after the mother had been discharged.
After the abduction, Nashik City police began an extensive search for the woman responsible for the act. During their investigation, they received a tip-off about a woman who had brought a small baby to a private hospital in Panchavati.
Motive behind the abduction
Sapna Marathe, from Dhule, was arrested in Dindori, Nashik, for stealing a baby from Nashik's district hospital. When questioned about why she stole the child, Marathe said that she was unable to conceive due to two miscarriages and had gone to the hospital to steal a newborn. Her desperation to have a child led her to take Suman Khan’s baby.
Marathe, an MBA graduate and accountant, had been lying to her family for nine months, claiming she was pregnant. After the theft, she took the baby to her home in Dhule. Her father later confirmed to the police that Marathe had been deceiving everyone about her pregnancy. This revelation shocked her relatives, who had no idea about her actions, exposing the full extent of her deception.
