On the Karwa Chauth night, twelve newlywed brides allegedly drugged their in-laws and escaped with cash and jewellery worth over ₹30 lakh in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh.
The incident occurred in the Sasni Gate police station area, where multiple families were duped by women who had married into their homes just days earlier.
According to a report by India Today, the women fasted for Karwa Chauth, performed all rituals, and later served food mixed with intoxicants to family members.
Once the families lost consciousness, the brides fled with gold, silver ornaments, and cash, leaving their homes locked behind them.
Most of these marriages were reportedly arranged through brokers from Bihar and Jharkhand. The affected families had even paid large sums to these brokers to arrange the weddings, police said.
After the brides disappeared, family members tried to reach the brokers, but all their phones were switched off. Their whereabouts remain unknown.
Following several complaints, the police registered four FIRs at Sasni Gate Police Station and launched an investigation.
ASP Mayank Pathak confirmed that FIRs have been filed and a probe is underway.
He said,
“Several teams have been formed for the case's disclosure, and the accused will be arrested soon.”
Preliminary investigations suggest that the brokers carefully targeted families and arranged the marriages in a way that allowed the brides to escape easily after gaining trust.
Police teams are now working to trace both the women and their accomplices involved in the racket.
