Punjab Police have caught a man accused of killing 11 men over a period of 18 months in three different areas of the state. The man, Ram Saroop, also called Sodhi, is 33 years old and comes from Chora village in Hoshiarpur. He committed these crimes in a very brutal way. After killing his victims, he would do something strange—he would ask for their forgiveness and write the word “dhokebaaz,” which means “traitor,” on their backs.
Saroop's crimes took place in the Rupnagar, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Hoshiarpur districts. He was arrested on Tuesday, and during interrogation, he admitted to committing these murders.
Saroop worked as a sex worker and would approach men at night, asking for a ride or negotiating payment for his services. Disputes over money often turned violent. He strangled most of his victims using his muffler, while others died due to head injuries.
In one case, Saroop made a deal with a mechanic to provide his services for Rs 150. However, they got into a fight, and the mechanic hit him first. In response, Saroop strangled the mechanic with his muffler. After killing him, Saroop did something strange—he asked for forgiveness by touching the dead man’s feet. Saroop said that many of his crimes were committed under the influence of alcohol. He also admitted that he sometimes could not remember all the murders he carried out.
Saroop's personal life was also deeply troubled. Married with three children, his family left him two years ago after learning about his sexual orientation.
Police investigation continues
Saroop was initially arrested for the murder of Maninder Singh, a 37-year-old tea vendor, on August 18. During questioning, he confessed to killing 10 more men. Police have confirmed five of these cases so far, and investigations are still ongoing to verify the others.
