A Delhi court on Wednesday convicted Congress MP Sajjan Kumar in connection with the murders of two people during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in the Saraswati Vihar area
The hearing on the sentencing is scheduled for February 18, Special Judge Kaveri Baweja handed down the judgment order. Kumar, imprisoned in Tihar jail was presented before the court for the pronouncement of the judgement.
The brutal murder of Jaswant Singh and his son, Tarundeep Singh on November 1, 1984, form the basis of this case. At first, the Punjabi Bagh police station handled the case, but a Special Investigation Team (SIT) later took it over.
According to the prosecution, in response to the killing of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, a ferocious mob armed with lethal weapons stormed through the neighborhood looting, setting houses alight, and attacking Sikh families.
Jaswant Singh's spouse, the complainant, claimed the angry group broke into their house, murdered her husband and son, took all the possessions, and set fire to the building.
With a "prima facie" case against Kumar, the court framed charges on December 16, 2021. During the trial, the court found sufficient evidence to conclude that Kumar was not just a participant but had actually "led the mob" during the attacks.
Kumar being presently convicted, the court will listen to sentencing debates on February 18.
