A groom in Uttar Pradesh's Chandauli left his bride-to-be and her family helpless at the wedding venue after calling off the marriage because of a minor delay in serving food. What’s more shocking? The groom went on to marry his cousin the very same day.

What happened at the wedding?

The bride, a resident of Hamidpur village, was set to marry Mehtab, whom she had been engaged to for seven months. On December 22, the groom and his family were warmly welcomed by the bride's family. The celebration turned ugly when a slight delay in serving food angered Mehtab after his friends teased him.

The bride said, "I was ready since morning. The groom and his family arrived, ate, and then abused and assaulted my parents before leaving the spot. I later approached the police for justice."

The village elders tried to resolve the situation and convince Mehtab to go ahead with the wedding, but he and his family decided to leave. A few hours later, the bride’s family was shocked to find out that Mehtab had married his cousin instead.

Who will take responsibility for the loss?

Adding to the insult, the bride’s family claimed that they had already given Rs 1.5 lakh to Mehtab’s family before the wedding and spent Rs 7 lakh on the arrangements for the ceremony, which included catering for 200 guests.

The family sought justice by filing a police complaint on December 23. They alleged negligence by local authorities and eventually escalated the matter to Superintendent of Police Aditya Laghe.

Circle Officer Rajesh Rai said both parties agreed to an amicable settlement. "A written agreement was signed by both parties that an amount of Rs 1.61 lakh would be given to the woman’s family," he explained.
