A Business Class passenger on an Air India flight from Chicago to Delhi was left surprised after being told that her seat had a technical issue and wouldn’t recline. According to her, the crew offered her two Economy Class seats instead — even before she boarded the flight.
The woman, who shared her experience with travel blog View From The Wing, said she chose to stick with her original Business Class seat, despite the crew pressuring her to make the switch. They even handed her a form to fill out, which made her feel like this might not have been a one-off incident.
Once onboard, she discovered that the only problem with her seat was a broken tray table. But what shocked her more was what happened mid-flight: the same Business Class seats she was offered as a downgrade were later used by the cabin crew to sleep. Blankets were laid out, and the staff took turns resting while passengers watched.
The woman also mentioned that another traveler had been downgraded from First Class to Business Class due to another broken seat. Meanwhile, she noticed there were still a few empty Business Class rows — raising even more questions.
Air India’s long-haul Chicago–Delhi route, over 12,000 km in distance, reportedly uses older planes with outdated interiors. While the airline is in the process of upgrading its fleet, incidents like this have become a common complaint among passengers.
