OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has joined hands with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to launch a powerful new artificial intelligence (AI) center in Abu Dhabi. The project, called Stargate, will be the first international version of OpenAI’s AI infrastructure and is set to become the largest AI data center in the world.

Stargate is more than just a name, it's a massive project. A one-gigawatt AI computing cluster will be built in Abu Dhabi, and part of it (200 megawatts) is expected to start working by 2026.

The goal is to create an advanced base for AI computing that can reach people across a wide area. In fact, Stargate UAE is expected to support AI services for up to half of the world’s population, covering a 2,000-mile radius.

This project isn't just about technology, it’s also a $500 billion investment over the next four years. According to OpenAI, “the Stargate Project is a new company which intends to invest USD 500 billion over the next four years building new AI infrastructure for OpenAI in the United States.”

The Stargate platform is supported by major companies like G42, Oracle, NVIDIA, Cisco, and SoftBank.

This partnership is a key part of the UAE's larger goal to lead in technology. Earlier this year, the country promised to invest USD 1.4 trillion in the U.S., which aims to create jobs, support the economy, and help the U.S. stay ahead in tech.

OpenAI says Stargate shows their “long-term vision,” focusing on building powerful and safe AI systems that can benefit people across the world.
