The wife of an Indian student who was severely assaulted by four unidentified thieves in Chicago, United States, contacted the Indian government for medical and legal assistance. On February 4, a masters student named Syed Mazahir Ali was assaulted and robbed.
Syed Mazahir Ali's wife, Ruqiya Fatima, wrote to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday. "This is to state that my husband Syed Mazahir Ali who was pursuing a Masters in Information and Technology from Indiana Wesley University, I got a call around 6 pm on February 4 from one of my husband’s friends that he had been attacked very badly and robbed at Campbell Ave, Chicago while he was near his apartment and has been taken to some hospital," she wrote.
"US government did not offer sufficient treatment"
According to Ruqiya Fatima, Ali is in "shock" and unable to speak due to his present mental instability. “I am very much worried about the safety and security of my husband. I request you to kindly help him in getting the best medical treatment and if possible make necessary arrangements so that I can travel to USA along with my three minor children to be with my husband,” she wrote.
Meanwhile, Fatima told the media that the US government did not offer sufficient treatment to her husband.
Earlier, a video of the terrible event circulated on social media, showing Ali bleeding severely. In the footage, he can be heard pleading: "Please help me bro, please help me" while clearly terrified and panting.
Ali, who came to the United States from Hyderabad approximately six months ago, told ABC7 Eyewitness News that one of the assailants pulled out a pistol at him. Video footage shows Ali coming home at night with a package in his hand when the three guys follow him and punch him in the eye, face, ribs, and back. According to an ABC7 story, he was brought to a nearby hospital and treated for many wounds and bruises.
“America has been my dream country and I came here to fulfil my dreams and pursue my Masters. The incident gave me trauma,” Ali told the news outlet. According to the article, the police have no suspects in custody, and the investigation is ongoing.
The Consulate General of India in Chicago stated on X that the “Consulate is in touch with Syed Mazahir Ali and his wife in India Syeda Ruquiya Fatima Razvi and assured all possible assistance. The consulate has also contacted the local authorities who are investigating the case.”
