The White House has called Donald Trump “The Peace President,” even though Trump himself doesn’t seem confident about winning the Nobel Peace Prize. The U.S. President claims to have helped resolve seven global conflicts, but he believes the Norwegian Nobel Committee will find a reason not to give him the award.
Trump’s statement came shortly after he announced that Israel and Hamas had agreed to a first-phase ceasefire deal in Gaza, following several days of indirect peace talks in Egypt. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said he had no idea about his chances of winning the Nobel Prize, which will be announced on Friday. He mentioned that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio could confirm that they had “settled seven wars” and were close to ending an eighth. Trump added that he also hopes to resolve the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, boasting that “nobody in history has settled that many.”
While Trump showed doubt about receiving the Nobel, the White House went ahead and shared his picture on social media with the caption “The Peace President.” Trump has long wanted the Nobel Peace Prize and often questioned why former President Barack Obama received it in his first year in office. He frequently boasts his own peace agreements and insists that his record is greater than most other world leaders.
Many of Trump’s supporters, known to praise him openly, have celebrated his nominations even after the official deadline passed on January 31. Trump was nominated for the prize during his first term as well but did not win.
Interestingly, one of the countries that nominated him this year was Pakistan. On June 20, Pakistan’s government announced that it would recommend Trump’s name for the Nobel Peace Prize, praising his “decisive diplomatic intervention” during the India-Pakistan crisis in May. However, India denied that the U.S. played any role in ending the conflict. New Delhi stated that the ceasefire happened after Pakistan’s military directly requested one, as it was struggling after India’s strikes. Despite his doubts, Trump continues to believe that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to promote peace worldwide.
