US President Donald Trump has announced new tariffs on goods from 22 countries, including Brazil, Iraq, and the Philippines. These tariffs will start from August 1, 2025, and no extensions will be allowed. Trump made the announcement on Wednesday through his social media platform, Truth Social.

Trump also criticised the ongoing trial of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, calling it a “witch hunt.” He posted a letter about the new 50% tariff on Brazilian goods, starting August 1.

Which countries are affected?

Earlier on Wednesday, Trump announced tariffs of up to 30% on goods from seven countries, including:

  • Algeria: 30%
  • Iraq: 30%
  • Libya: 30%
  • Philippines: 20%
  • Brunei: 25%
  • Moldova: 25%
  • Sri Lanka: 30%
  • Brazil: 50%

These letters were posted on Truth Social and mentioned exact tariff rates. According to Trump, “a letter means a deal.”

On Tuesday, he had already warned 14 countries about possible trade actions. With the new batch of 8 more countries, the total now stands at 22 countries under his expanding tariff plan.

Trump said, “As per letters sent to various countries yesterday, in addition to letters that will be sent today, tomorrow, and for the next short period of time, TARIFFS WILL START BEING PAID ON AUGUST 1, 2025. There has been no change to this date, and there will be no change. In other words, all money will be due and payable starting AUGUST 1, 2025—no extensions will be granted. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

What did Trump say about BRICS?

Trump also made strong comments against BRICS, the group that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. He claimed the group was created to “hurt” the United States and to “degenerate” the US dollar.

He added:

“They have to pay 10 percent if they are in BRICS.”

List of other countries that received tariff letters:

  • Laos
  • Myanmar
  • Thailand
  • Cambodia
  • Bangladesh
  • Serbia
  • Indonesia
  • South Africa
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Malaysia
  • Tunisia
  • Japan
  • South Korea
  • Kazakhstan

This step is seen as part of Trump’s plan to reduce US trade deficits and push back against countries he accuses of blocking American exports.
