A new set of documents released by theUS Department of Justice (DoJ) as part of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation includes an unverified allegation against former US President Donald Trump. The allegation claims that Trump raped a woman several decades ago. However, the Justice Department has strongly denied the claim, calling it “false,” “sensational,” and lacking any proof.
The documents were made public on Tuesday under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, a law that requires federal agencies to release records linked to Epstein’s criminal case. According to the Justice Department, the allegation against Trump is not supported by evidence and should not be considered true.
In a rare move, the Justice Department publicly defended Trump, stating that some of the allegations were sent to the FBI shortly before the 2020 US presidential election and were not credible. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the department said that if the claims had any real basis, they would already have been used against Trump in political attacks.
The newly released files include raw tips and statements submitted to federal investigators over many years. Among them is a claim by a woman who accused bothTrump and Epstein of rape. Another document includes a statement from a limousine driver who said he overheard Trump talking about Epstein abusing a girl. However, the documents do not confirm whether the FBI investigated these claims.
The woman who made the rape allegation later died from a gunshot wound to the head after reporting the incident. The Justice Department clarified that nowhere in the released files do law enforcement officials say that Trump was formally investigated or suspected of committing a crime.
While Trump had a social relationship with Epstein until the mid-2000s, the records do not link him to any criminal charges. One email from 2020, written by an unnamed federal prosecutor, claimed that Trump had flown on Epstein’s private jet more often than previously reported. This reportedly happened during a time when Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s associate, was under investigation. Maxwell was later convicted on multiple federal charges related to sex trafficking.
The Justice Department explained that the latest release includes about 30,000 documents, many of which contain unverified claims and internal notes. Officials warned that just because an allegation appears in the files does not mean it is true.
Many parts of the documents were heavily redacted to protect Epstein’s victims, as required by law. Hundreds of thousands more documents are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
Trump signed the transparency law last month, even though he had earlier resisted calls to make Epstein-related records public. Speaking at his Mar-a-Lago resort, Trump called the ongoing disclosures a “distraction” and warned that photos and documents linking people to Epstein could unfairly harm reputations.
Meanwhile, Democrats on the House Oversight Committee accused the Justice Department of trying to hide the truth. The department rejected these claims, saying it is following the law and that transparency does not mean the allegations are proven.
