Central Railway has announced that the iconic Neral–Matheran toy train service will restart on 6 November 2025, after a four-month suspension during the monsoon season. The reopening will reconnect the scenic hill station of Matheran with the plains, allowing tourists and locals to enjoy this historic narrow-gauge route once again.
The Neral–Matheran stretch covers 21 kilometres and was first opened in 1907. Recognised as a UNESCO heritage corridor, it is popular for its forested slopes, sharp curves, and stunning views.
The service is usually paused from June to October during heavy rains to protect the tracks from damage. Even during this period, limited shuttle services run between Aman Lodge and Matheran for residents and visitors.
Train timings and coaches
As the full service resumes, two pairs of regular trains will operate daily. Trains from Neral depart at 8:50 am and 10:25 am, while the return journeys from Matheran are at 2:45 pm and 4:00 pm.
The trains feature a mix of second-class, first-class, and vistadome coaches, allowing passengers to enjoy the lush landscapes of the Western Ghats during the ride.
A Central Railway official said, “Safety checks were completed to ensure that the monsoon did not compromise the structural integrity of the line.”
The official also added that minor vegetation clearance and track repairs have been carried out ahead of the reopening.
Along with the regular train services, the Aman Lodge–Matheran shuttle trains will continue running daily to provide easy travel for short distances.
