Russia launched a series of airstrikes on Ukraine on Sunday, firing 120 missiles and 90 drones targeting its energy infrastructure. The attack killed 7 people and injured several others. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the strikes involved various types of drones, including Iranian-made Shaheds, as well as cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and aircraft-launched missiles.

In defence, Ukraine shot down Russia's 140 air targets said Zelensky. He further added, “The enemy’s target was our energy infrastructure throughout Ukraine. Unfortunately, objects are damaged by hits and falling debris. In Mykolaiv, as a result of a drone attack, two people were killed and six others were injured, including two children.”

Citing the attack as the largest one, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote, “Russia launched one of the largest air attacks: drones and missiles against peaceful cities, sleeping civilians, critical infrastructure. This is war criminal Putin’s true response to all those who called and visited him recently. We need peace through strength, not appeasement.

The strike occurred shortly after Donald Trump's victory in the U.S. presidential election, in which he promised to end the war once in power. It led to numerous emergency power cuts in several regions.

Two people were killed in the Odesa region after a missile and drone attack damaged energy infrastructure, causing power and water outages, according to local Governor Oleh Kiper. This was the strongest attack in three months, said Serhii Popko, head of Kyiv’s City Military Administration.

Since Russia’s full invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian strikes have repeatedly targeted Ukraine's power systems, leading to emergency blackouts and power cuts. Ukrainian officials have called on Western countries to provide more air defence to protect the infrastructure and help with repairs.

According to local reports, Explosions were heard across Ukraine on Sunday, including in Kyiv, Odesa, and other regions in the western and central parts of the country. In response to the "massive" Russian attack on Ukraine, Poland's military announced that Polish and allied fighter jets were deployed in Polish airspace. This move was taken to ensure safety in Poland's border areas.
