Israel PM Netanyahu has condemned French President Macron, who has shown support to the Palestinian state, and called for arms restriction on Israel, stating that their actions in Gaza are disgraceful. Netanyahu, during his live Saturday address, criticised Macron, saying that Israel is in a fight against several factions backed by Iran. Netanyahu stated, "As Israel fights the forces of barbarism led by Iran, all civilised countries should be standing firmly by Israel’s side.” He further added, "Yet President Macron and other Western leaders are now calling for arms embargoes against Israel. Shame on them.”
Netanyahu stressed that Israel has several adversaries: Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, Iran helped Houthis in Yemen, Shiite militiamen in Iraq and Syria, and terrorists in the West Bank. Netanyahu questioned whether Iran has limited weapons supply to their allies in an attempt at responding to those who demanded that the shipments should cease to Israel.
“Of course not,” the Israeli leader said, continuing the statement with “this axis of terror stands together. But countries that supposedly oppose this terror axis call for an arms embargo on Israel. What a disgrace!" In light of increasing global pressure on the nation, Netanyahu remains stubborn, he said. “Israel will win with or without their support. But their shame will continue long after the war is won."
Earlier, Macron had suggested in an interview that stopping arms deliveries to Israel may lead to contextualization of the conflict in Gaza and prevent a new round of escalation. Macron said,I think we are not being heard. It is a mistake, including for the security of Israel.”
Macron also spoke of avoiding escalation in Lebanon even though Israel is continuing attacks on Hezbollah in Beirut. “Lebanon cannot become a new Gaza,’ said the French leader. In response to Netanyahu’s harsh comment, Macron’s office published a statement in which they reaffirmed French support for the state of Israel and remarked, “steadfast friend of Israel.” They also stated that Netanyahu's statements are “excessive and detached from the friendship."
