Moscow on the backfoot as Ukraine launches 'one of the largest ever drone attacks'

The Russian air defence units reportedly took down 11 drones flying towards the capital city.

Amidst the escalating tension, Ukraine launched a large-scale drone attack on the Russian capital. Moscow’s mayor accused Kyiv of launching one of the largest ever drone attacks in the national capital on Wednesday. No casualties have been reported following the attack. The Russian air defense units reportedly took down 11 drones flying towards the capital city.

“This is one of the largest attempts to attack Moscow using drones ever,” the Mayor stated on the Telegram messaging app at 4:43 a.m.

According to Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, several drones were destroyed over the city of Podolsk. Meanwhile, the ministry also confirmed taking down Six drones over Belgorod, a Russian land sharing a border with Ukraine, three over the Kaluga region, bordering Moscow to its northeast, and two more over the embattled Kursk region.

The attack came out as Russia struggled to force out Ukraine from the Kursk region invaded in what is referred to as Ukraine’s largest attack in Russia since the start of the war. With this massive drone attack two weeks after piercing the western border of Russia and invading the territory (which has not been done since WW2), Ukraine has strengthened its stance in the war.

Ukraine has been involved in multiple drone attacks targeting the Russian capital, but the Wednesday attack was bigger than all. It even surpassed the May 2023 attack, where eight drones were destroyed over the capital region. Putin labelled that attack as Kyiv’s attempt to scare and provoke Russia.

Russian officials always try to disclose as few details as possible. The same was true with this case, where they stated information only about the drones that its air defence units destroyed. Both nations never disclose the complete details of the attack until there are any casualties.

Until now, Ukraine has not issued any statement regarding the Wednesday drone attack.

Recently, Ukraine has targeted the key infrastructures of Moscow, launching multiple air attacks on Russian territory. They labelled the attack as the response towards Russia’s continued air strikes on Ukrainian territory.
