Musk secretly bankrolled right-wing political groups years before supporting Trump: Reports

Musk's funding began in 2022, amounting to millions of dollars that were utilised to boost advertisements and social media campaigns criticising Biden.

Musk secretly bankrolled a conservative political group in recent years, even before openly endorsing former US President Donald Trump in the elections. The SpaceX and Tesla CEO had secretly funded a conservative political group in recent years, , with “Musk secretly bankrolled” the group even before vouching for Trump.Four sources familiar with the donations told Reuters, highlighting Musk’s financial backing to right-wing causes.

Reuters’ sources claim that Musk’s funding for the organisation, Building America’s Future, began in 2022, amounting to millions of dollars that were utilised to boost advertisements and social media campaigns criticising the Biden administration and progressive platforms, which the billionaire himself condemned.

However, the accurate amount and timeline of the donation were not identified by the news agency. This Wednesday, The Wall Street Journal reported that the billionaire had funded other pro-Republican groups as well.

In the past, the Business Tycoon has carefully avoided any bias for the two major political parties, maintaining his neutral stance; this year, in March, he even stated, “Just to be super clear, I am not donating money to either candidate for US President.” However, after a few months of it, the billionaire entrepreneur came forward to openly endorse the Republican candidate and announced his plans to fund a political action committee (PAC) aimed at opposing the Democratic Party.

Building America’s Future is a non-profit 501(c)(4) group, which means that the organisation is not bound to reveal its financial backers by federal law. While these groups are not allowed to fund the political campaigns of the candidate, they can echo their political cause, and because of it, they are referred to as “dark money” groups used by the parties to conceal the source of funding, similar to the concept of Electoral Bonds in India, as both mechanisms involve unethical funding without transparency.

Building America’s Future criticizes the Biden Administration

In the last couple of years, Building America’s Future has relentlessly targeted the Biden administration over illegal immigration, an issue that Musk frequently comments on. Recently, the conservation group posted an anti-immigration video claiming Vice President Kamala Harris “led the invasion” of migrants across the Mexican border and has always “put illegals first.”

The right-wing group also launched a $10 million advertising campaign aimed at weakening Black support for Harris, NBC News reported in August. The campaign disapproves the ban on menthol cigarettes by the White House.

Musk’s political ideology leaned towards the right-wing in recent years; he claimed that previously he had voted for Democratic presidential candidates, including Biden and Hillary Clinton. But he became a critic as the administration gave a “very cold shoulder” to Tesla and SpaceX.
