An inspiring story of Vinul Karunaratne, an online migrant from Sri Lanka who arrived in Australia less than a decade ago, has stormed the internet. Born in Sri Lanka, Vinul Karunaratne has turned himself to become a millionaire. This is after he leveraged gig jobs through the online marketplace Airtasker since his arrival in Australia in 2015.

From 7-eleven employee to top earner on Airtasker

Karunaratne worked at a 7-Eleven store, but in 2019, he started working in end-of-lease cleaning through a platform called Airtasker, which is an application founded in Sydney that has people outsource everyday tasks, such as cleaning or assembling furniture, for a fee. With just a vacuum, a mop, a bucket, and rags, he started building his reputation on the platform with sheer hard work.

Karunaratne’s dedication has made him one of Airtasker’s top 10 earners, raking in an impressive $1,000 to $1,400 per day. His primary works include the cleaning of bonds, carpet steaming, and office cleaning.

According to reports from the Daily Mail, Karunaratne has successfully used the flexibility of gig work to achieve financial freedom, all within a few years.

"I'm My Own Boss," Says Karunaratne

Karunaratne said that the opportunity to work independently has been a game-changer for him. “It’s physical work, but it’s good money. I enjoy the flexibility and working on my own terms. I’m my own boss,” he said.

Tim Fung, founder and CEO of Airtasker, referred to Karunaratne’s story as an inspiration for others who are looking to earn extra cash by working hard. Fung expressed hope that more opportunities will become available on the platform in the future.

Karunaratne’s story of going from a migrant worker to a millionaire through sheer determination and the opportunities provided by gig work serves as a powerful example of how hard work and seizing the right opportunities can change one’s life.
