North Korea’s Kim Jong Un executes 30 officials for failing to stop flooding

According to a North Korean official cited by South Korea's Chosun TV, Kim gave the order for "severe punishment" to be meted out to those accountable for the "unacceptable loss."

According to reports, this month, Kim Jong Un executed 30 officials at once for their alleged failure to stop flooding. In July, the Chagang Province saw severe flooding and rain, resulting in more than 1,000 fatalities and a large number of homeless people.

According to a North Korean official cited by South Korea’s Chosun TV, Kim gave the order for “severe punishment” to be meted out to those accountable for the “unacceptable loss.” According to the report, around twenty to thirty officials were removed from regions hit by flooding. The official was cited as stating, “It has been determined that 20 to 30 cadres in the flood-stricken area were executed at the same time late last month.”

Kim Jong Un had earlier instructed officials at an emergency Politburo meeting to “strictly punish” anyone who, in his words, disregarded their duties for disaster prevention and caused “even the casualty that can not be allowed.” This information was provided by the North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Kang Bong-hoon, the secretary of the Chagang Province Party, is said to have initiated a probe into his activities. It’s thought that he went with Kim to check on many flood locations. The encounter with Kim left provincial officials “so anxious that they don’t know when their necks will fall off,” according to a comment from former North Korean ambassador Lee Il-gyu on Chosun TV.

The South Korean media estimated that over a thousand people perished in North Korea as a result of the intense rains. People were extremely distressed as a result of the flooding of 7,410 acres of agricultural land and 4,100 dwellings. In the neighboring town of Uiju and the northwest metropolis of Sinuiju, several roads, buildings, infrastructure, and railroads also suffered significant damage.

The North Korean ruler frequently gives similar commands to officials in response to their supposed shortcomings. He had his nuclear envoy Kim Hyok Chol executed back in 2019 for not being able to set up a meeting between Kim and US President Donald Trump at the time.
