Khalistani extremists gathered in Kananaskis, Alberta, to protest against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Canada for the G7 summit. They called it an “ambush” protest. PM Modi is currently on a four-day visit to three countries, Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia. He arrived in Canada today for the second part of his tour.
During his time in Canada, PM Modi is expected to have meetings with Canadian leader Mark Carney and also with leaders from Germany, Italy, and Ukraine at the summit.

Canadian journalist Daniel Bordman said that before PM Modi’s visit, a group of Khalistani supporters held a strong protest in Calgary. They shouted extreme slogans, asking Canadian PM Mark Carney and US President Donald Trump to “kill Modi politics” and “kill India politics.” They even called for breaking up India into smaller parts, a process known as “Balkanisation.”
Bordman said the protest was very noisy, with people shouting and loudspeakers playing at the same time. He also said the protestors made a new anti-Modi song that was very offensive. Another journalist, Mocha Bezirgan, said a banned group called Sikhs for Justice was part of the protest. They were asking to stop PM Modi’s politics.Bezirgan also shared that earlier this month, he was attacked and threatened by pro-Khalistan people while covering another protest.
Videos of the protest went viral and many people, especially from the Sikh community in India, were upset. A leader from Patna Sahib Gurudwara said it was wrong to involve children in such protests and strongly condemned the hate against India. Journalist Bordman also said that the Khalistani movement in Canada seems to be getting weaker. He praised Canada’s PM Mark Carney for inviting PM Modi to the G7 Summit. He said Canada and India have strong trade ties and good relations are more important than supporting any extremist group.
Journalist Daniel Bordman said that by inviting PM Modi, Canadian PM Mark Carney is showing a clear change. He wants to move away from the earlier soft attitude some people in Canada had towards terrorists and separatists. Bordman called it a good first step to stop radical thinking.India has often raised concerns about Canada being too soft on Khalistani extremists and their supporters.
Relations between India and Canada have recently become worse. This is mainly because India feels Canada hasn’t done enough to stop Khalistani activities, while Canada has accused India of targeting pro-Khalistani people living there.
