On Sunday, K P Sharma Oli was named prime minister of Nepal for the third time. He will head a new coalition administration that has the difficult task of bringing political stability to the nation.
Following Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda's loss of the vote of confidence in the House of Representatives on Friday, K P Sharma Oli, 72, takes over as the new leader of the country in accordance with Article 76(2) of the Constitution. K P Sharma Oli was named the next prime minister of the alliance between the Nepali Congress (NC) and the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) by President Ram Chandra Paudel.
On Monday, K P Sharma Oli and the newly appointed Cabinet will take an oath of office.
President Ram Chandra Paudel had invited political parties to form a new government under Article 76 (2) of the constitution on the same evening, following outgoing prime minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal's failure to win the confidence of the House of Representatives during Friday's floor test. The invitation was extended with a Sunday evening deadline for submitting claims at the President's Office.
K P Sharma Oli's Arrival at the President's Office
The 72-year-old Oli arrived in the President's Office shortly after the President's call, escorted by President Sher Bahadur Deuba of the Nepali Congress, his new coalition partner, to lay claim to the prime ministership.
With the support of NC president Sher Bahadur Deuba, K P Sharma Oli announced late on Friday night that he would be the new prime minister. He did this by obtaining the signatures of 165 members of the House of Representatives (HoR), 77 of whom were from his party and 88 of whom were from the NC.
From October 11, 2015, until August 3, 2016, and again from February 5, 2018, to July 13, 2021(Once he became PM for 60 days between May 13,2021 to July 13,2021), K P Sharma Oli was the prime minister of Nepal.
