Australia increased the cost of an overseas student's visa by over 100% as part of major migration management measures. The cost of an International Student Visa Fees increased from AU$710 ($474) to AU$1600 ($1,068) as of July 1. This action attempts to reduce pressure on the already tight housing market and limit record migration.

According to Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil, these adjustments will make Australia's immigration system more equitable, manageable, and successful while also restoring integrity to the global education system. Due to the increase in fees, obtaining a student visa for Australia is now much more expensive than in other nations like the United States and Canada, where the fees are approximately $185 and 150 Canadian dollars, respectively.

Along with raising fees, the government is also tightening visa regulations' loopholes, which permit international students to repeatedly prolong their stay in Australia. These regulatory adjustments are a result of the over 30% increase in students on second or subsequent student visas, which reached over 150,000 in 2022–2023.

Economic Impact of Higher International Student Visa Fees

Although the government wants to control immigration, some claim that Australia's standing could be compromised if legislative pressure on the education sector persists. Australia's largest export industry, international education makes a substantial economic contribution. Its value in the 2022–2023 fiscal year was AU$36.4 billion.

These policies are a reflection of Australia's attempts to maintain its appeal as a study destination for overseas students while also regulating migration. Nonetheless, there is ongoing discussion over the effects on colleges and students, with issues of accessibility and affordability.

To address migration difficulties, Australia recently adopted a comprehensive Migration Strategy. The following are some crucial steps:

Universal Visa Requirement: Australia upholds a universal visa requirement, meaning that all visitors must have a current visa to enter the nation.

Disruption of People-Smuggling Networks: To prevent irregular migration, the government aggressively strives to break people-smuggling networks.

Offshore Processing and Resettlement: Migration management is significantly impacted by Australia's offshore processing and placement policy for asylum seekers apprehended at sea.

Boat Turnbacks Policy: The nation's policy for returning unregistered vessels to their place of origin attempts to stop irregular arrivals.

About 619,371 overseas students are studying in Australia as per the most recent data available. 361,247 of them are enrolled only in postsecondary educational institutions.
