Indian airlines are on track for a significant surge in their share of India's international air travel. By 2028, these airlines could be handling a hefty 50% of the country’s international passenger traffic suggested by a recent report from CRISIL ratings, a notable jump from the current 43% share observed in 2024.
The anticipated spike is attributed to various factors, including the planned addition of more aircraft, the introduction of new international routes, and the advantage Indian carriers enjoy in domestic connectivity over their foreign counterparts.
The main reason for this to happen is that the Indian airlines are planning to bring in more planes and open new routes to other countries. They also have an advantage because they connect more Indian cities within the country compared to foreign airlines. It has been hard on airlines for international travel because of COVID-19, but things are looking up.
Before the pandemic, about 10 million people traveled internationally from India in one year. However, by 2024, that number had jumped to around 70 million, which is even more than before COVID-19 hit.
People in India are now more interested in traveling for fun to other countries. Plus, with more money to spend, easier visa rules, and better airports, it is becoming easier for Indians to explore the world. The government is also working to attract more tourists to India, which means more people flying in from other countries. Indian airlines are taking advantage of this growing trend by adding new flights to popular destinations like the United States, Europe, and Australia. They are also making it easier to fly directly from smaller Indian cities to these far-off places without stopping in between.
India's location on the map also helps, it is a good spot for connecting flights between different countries. To make the most of this opportunity, Indian airlines are buying bigger planes that can fly longer distances. They are also teaming up with other big airlines to offer more flights to more places around the world. Ankit Kedia, who works at CRISIL Ratings, says Indian airlines are working hard to make sure they get a big piece of the international travel pie. They are even planning to grow by 14-15 percent every year for the next four years, aiming to carry half of all international travelers from India by 2028. So, it looks like Indian airlines are all set to become big players in the world of international travel. With more planes, more routes, and more partnerships, they are ready to take off and soar high.
