Explosions rocked central Kyiv throughout the rush hour on Tuesday as Ukraine's military had warned of a massive Russian drone missile attack after waves of drone attacks on Monday early morning. The Russian air force said that many missiles had been launched and informed the Ukrainians that 11 TU-95 strategic bombers were airborne. The Reuters reporters heard the boom of air defenses hitting their targets just outside the capital of Ukraine.
Preliminary Reports on Drone Missile Attack: No Injuries or Damage
According to local authorities, explosions had been reported in Lutsk. An apartment block had been destroyed, and they were working on the assumption of victims. Russia made the attacks that also targeted locations in western Ukraine and close to the Polish border, the Polish military's Operational Command stated on X, announcing that aircraft of the Polish and their allies had been put on alert.
Ukrainians have awaited a big missile strike by Russia for days. Ukrainian Independence Day celebrations have occurred across Ukraine on Saturday, and the U.S. embassy warned its citizens last week: it said it received information that violence is more likely for the week.
Ukraine has increased its long-range drone attacks on Russia in a boiling-over war of reprisal over Moscow's full-scope raid on Ukraine starting in February 2022. "The desire to destroy our energy will cost the Russians dearly: their infrastructure," President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, said on Telegram in apparent vow to respond in kind.
Preliminary reports showed no injuries or damage, the Ukrainian military said on its Facebook page, as communication and power outages marked the overnight to Monday morning in the city. As many as ten drones were shot down near Kyiv, an announcement by Serhiy Popko, head of the Kyiv military administration, on Telegram, stated some 14:30 GMT.
There was no immediate response from Russia. Russia and Ukraine have both denied targeting civilians. Both argue that their strikes are meant to destroy vital infrastructure for the other's military campaign.
