The Duchess of Sussex revealed during the visit that a genealogy test unveiled her Nigerian ancestry, specifically identifying her as "43 percent Nigerian." 

Meghan Markle, accompanied by her husband Prince Harry, embarked on a trip to Nigeria that has ignited a flurry of reactions, especially in light of recent genealogy test results.

The Duchess of Sussex revealed during the visit that a genealogy test results unveiled her Nigerian ancestry, specifically identifying her as “43 percent Nigerian.” This newfound connection prompted Meghan to delve into her roots and foster a deeper bond with the country.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, embarked on a significant three-day tour of the African nation, marking their first official international visit since stepping back from their royal roles in 2020.

Notably, the couple’s visit was not conducted on behalf of the UK government or King Charles, but rather upon the invitation of Nigerian Chief of Defense Staff, General Christopher Musa. The purpose of their visit was to bring attention to Harry’s Invictus Games, a multi-sport event for wounded, injured, or sick armed services personnel and veterans. Its joined the Invictus Games last year and is set to send athletes to the event for the first time when it takes place in February 2025.

Addressing a captivated crowd during a women’s event at the World Trade Organization in Abuja, Meghan showcased heartfelt gratitude for the warm reception she and Harry received. Referring to Nigeria as “my country,” the Duchess showcased a profound sense of belonging and connection to her newly discovered heritage.

However, Meghan’s fashion choices throughout the trip have become a subject of controversy. At the women’s leadership summit, she donned a backless beige silk maxi dress known as the “Windsor Gown-Blush.” Some interpreted this attire as a deliberate reference to the Windsor royal family name, despite Harry and Meghan’s call to step back from their royal responsibilities. This choice sparked debates about Meghan’s intentions and whether she was seeking legitimacy through her fashion choices.

Criticism and support have emerged in equal measure regarding Meghan’s behaviour during the trip. Detractors labelled her as “phoney” and “rude,” accusing her of insincerity. On the other hand, her defenders argued that people were reading too much into her attire and actions, emphasizing the importance of focusing on the substance of her visit.
