The White House alerted Congress on Monday that the United States was running out of time and money to assist Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.

Budget Director Shalanda Young informed House and Senate leaders in a letter that the US will run out of funds to provide weapons and support to Ukraine by the end of the year, according to the Associated Press.

According to the source, Young highlighted the need of approving tens of billions of dollars in military and economic aid to Ukraine, warning that without it, Kyiv's war effort to protect itself from Russia's invasion will come to a standstill.

She went on to say that the US has already depleted the funds it has used to prop up Ukraine's economy, and that "if Ukraine's economy collapses, they will not be able to keep fighting, full stop."

"We are out of money — and nearly out of time," she put pen to paper, according to the Associated Press.

Earlier this month, President Joe Biden's administration requested over $106 billion from Congress to fulfill ambitious plans for Ukraine, Israel, and US border security.

However, Republicans hold a small majority in the House of Representatives, and money for Ukraine has become politically contentious among certain right-wing members, according to Reuters.

Congress has already appropriated $111 billion to assist Ukraine, including $67 billion for military purchases, $27 billion for economic and civic support, and $10 billion for humanitarian assistance. According to the Associated Press, Young stated that all of it had been exhausted by mid-November, with the exception of around 3% of military money.

The Biden administration has stated that in recent weeks, it has reduced the tempo of certain military assistance to Kyiv in order to stretch supplies until Congress authorizes more cash.

“We are out of money to support Ukraine in this fight,” Young wrote. “This isn’t a next year problem. The time to help a democratic Ukraine fight against Russian aggression is right now. It is time for Congress to act.”
