A blast at a mosque located inside a school complex in Jakarta, Indonesia, injured at least 54 people on Friday, authorities said. The incident took place at State Senior High School 72 in North Jakarta around 12:30 pm local time.
Local police chief Asep Edi Suheri said that the injured include people with minor to moderate wounds, while some have already been discharged from the hospital.
"The initial data we have received indicates that there are approximately 54 individuals affected. Some have minor injuries, some moderate, and some have already been discharged," he told reporters in a televised briefing.
He added that the cause of the explosion is still being investigated.
According to a report by the Jakarta Globe, investigators are looking into several possible reasons for the blast. These include an electrical short circuit, a malfunctioning electronic device, or a homemade explosive.
No official conclusion has been reached yet.
Witnesses said the mosque was filled with students and teachers when the explosion happened.
Most injuries were caused by broken glass and the force of the blast.
Math teacher Budi Laksono, who was inside the mosque, said the blast caused chaos.
“The sermon had just started when we heard a loud blast,” he said.
“Smoke quickly filled the room. The students ran out - some were crying, others fell in panic.”
Emergency teams and police arrived at the scene soon after, and the area has been secured. Medical staff treated the injured nearby before transferring some to hospitals.
Authorities said updates will be shared once the cause is confirmed.
