The execution was done in accordance with the Islamic Sharia law of “retribution,” a principle in Iranian law that permits for the death penalty in cases of murder. While capital punishment is common in Iran, public executions are rare, with most death sentences being carried out inside prisons, mostly by hanging.

Iran is known for its high rate of executions, second to China, according to human rights organizations Amnesty International. These groups have frequently raised concerns over the number of executions in the country, particularly those conducted under questionable legal circumstances.

The public execution on Monday comes just days after another execution in central Iran, where a male fortune teller was put to death for the charges of rape and sexual assault against his clients. This case has attracted a lot of attention to the strict implementation of capital punishment in the country.

Despite getting international criticism, Iran continues with the practice of the death penalty for a range of crimes, including murder, drug trafficking, and acts such as threats to national security. The use of public executions is intended to reinforce the consequences of serious crimes under Iranian law.
