Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been ordered by the Supreme Court to begin serving his 27-year prison sentence. This decision comes just days after his arrest for tampering with a court-ordered ankle monitor. The court found him guilty of attempting a coup to stay in power after losing the 2022 presidential election to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Ex-Brazil president Jair Bolsonaro sentenced to 27 years in jail , who has now exhausted all his legal appeals, will stay in a special cell at the police headquarters in Brasilia. This room is designed for protected prisoners and includes a bed, a TV, air conditioning, and a private bathroom. This is where he was already being held after his recent arrest.

On Tuesday, Justice Alexandre de Moraes officially ordered him to start serving his sentence.Bolsonaro’s lawyers had requested that he be allowed to stay under house arrest, arguing that he is older and suffers from several health problems. However, the court rejected this request last Saturday.

Bolsonaro governed Brazil from 2019 to 2022. After losing the 2022 election, he allegedly tried to stop Lula from taking office by plotting a coup. In September, he was sentenced to 27 years in prison for this crime. Before this, in August, he had been placed under house arrest for violating restrictions set by the court.

On November 22, the Supreme Court ordered his arrest again, saying he was a flight risk. They claimed he had tampered with his ankle monitor. Bolsonaro told the judge that medications he was taking caused paranoia and hallucinations, which led him to touch the device. He denied trying to escape or damage the monitor.

Bolsonaro’s lawyers argued that sending him to jail could endanger his life. They said he has many health issues, including lung infections, esophagitis, gastritis, sleep apnea (requiring a CPAP machine), skin cancer, and episodes of uncontrollable hiccups. They added that he had already been hospitalized three times recently, twice for tests and once for a medical emergency. Despite these arguments, the Supreme Court decided that Bolsonaro must begin serving his full prison sentence.
