Recent remarks by US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, have highlighted a notable transformation in the discourse regarding the India-Us relationship, focusing on friendship and collaboration rather than framing India as a counterweight to China.
In a recent interview, Garcetti expressed that the United States regards India as a “friend and partner,” emphasizing shared principles such as sovereignty, the rule of law, and respect for territorial integrity. He remarked, “We see India as a friend and a partner, not a counterbalance” to any nation, particularly in the ongoing tensions with China. This assertion is particularly relevant given the current strain in India’s relations with China, stemming from border disputes and geopolitical challenges.
Garcetti reiterated the US’s enduring support for India, especially during border conflicts. He pointed out that the US has acknowledged the McMahon Line since 1952 and has consistently opposed rewarding acts of aggression globally. This dedication to India’s sovereignty is vital as the nation navigates its intricate relationship with China.
The ambassador also underscored Washington’s support for India’s diplomatic efforts, particularly in addressing border disputes with China. He cited External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s comments indicating that around 75% of these disputes have been resolved, highlighting the significance of upholding sovereignty in ongoing discussions. Garcetti characterized the Quad as a “powerful place” for establishing shared visions and solutions to regional challenges, contrasting it with countries that neglect international standards.
The recent Quad Leaders’ Summit further reinforced this commitment, where leaders reiterated their resolve to tackle common issues while fostering stability and prosperity throughout the Indo-Pacific.
