Shashi Tharoor, a well-known author and politician from India, was honored with France’s highest civilian award, the Chevalier de la Legion d’honneur, at a ceremony held in Delhi. The award was presented to him by Gerard Larcher, the President of the French Senate, at the French Embassy. Tharoor, who represents the Thiruvananthapuram constituency as a Member of Parliament for the Indian National Congress, has authored numerous books and previously served as a Union minister. He was announced as the recipient of this prestigious award in August 2022, with the official ceremony taking place recently.
The French government bestowed this honor upon Tharoor in recognition of his tireless efforts to strengthen Indo-French relations, his commitment to international peace and cooperation, and his longstanding friendship with France. Gerard Larcher praised Tharoor's multifaceted career as a diplomat, author, and politician, highlighting his dedication to serving India and contributing to a better world. Expressing his gratitude upon receiving the award, Tharoor stated that he was deeply honored and humbled. He expressed his admiration for France, its people, culture, literature, and cinema. Tharoor also expressed his profound respect for French democracy, acknowledging its historical significance in championing principles of liberty, equality, and fraternity. Drawing from his experiences at the United Nations and interactions with French leaders, he highlighted the importance of building coalitions in an increasingly unstable world. Tharoor emphasized the natural partnership between India and France in creating new alliances amidst global uncertainties.
Reflecting on a memorable moment during his visit to France in 2002, Tharoor recalled witnessing the burial of the renowned novelist Alexandre Dumas at the Pantheon. He marveled at the French tradition of honoring writers and expressed appreciation for the recognition of Indian literary figures by France.
Established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, the Legion d’honneur is awarded to individuals for their exceptional service to France, irrespective of their nationality. The President of France serves as the Grand Master of the Order of the Legion of Honour.
The ceremony was attended by notable figures including Thierry Mathou, the French envoy to India, Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 sherpa, Lok Sabha MP Danish Ali, and Congress leader Anand Sharma, among others.
