Following his unorthodox sermon (religious discourse or oration by a preacher) over Easter weekend, a Catholic priest in England caused controversy by asserting that Jesus Christ died while in an erection.
Father Thomas McHale has reportedly kept his job despite the shock and outrage among the members of his congregation, a group of people who come together for religious devotion.
During a Good Friday sermon, Father McHale, a 53-year-old priest serving at the Our Blessed Lady Immaculate church in Blackhill, Consett, County Durham, made the assertion. He explained to his followers that Jesus would have experienced an erection from the blood rushing to his lower body during the brutal crucifixion manner of execution. About a hundred parishioners, including some young families, attended the sermon and were taken aback by the priest's words.
Catholic Priest Retains Position Despite Complaint
"Death erections," or post-mortem erections, are a well-researched phenomenon in male corpses who have died by hanging or suffocation, including crucifixion. But there is still disagreement and debate regarding the specifics of Jesus' crucifixion and whether or not he felt this reaction. Some have questioned whether it is proper to discuss such a topic in a religious atmosphere, while others have expressed curiosity and criticism regarding Father McHale's speech.
The diocese of Hexham & Newcastle received a complaint about the strange sermon and looked into the situation. The priest had expressed regret for his behavior, and the diocese accepted that his remarks were unsuitable for Easter services. Father McHale's status as parish priest has not changed, despite the complaint being upheld.
The diocese of Hexham & Newcastle issued the following statement regarding the controversy:
"A complaint was received and has been investigated in keeping with our diocesan complaints policy. The investigation has been very recently completed and the complaint is upheld. Father McHale has accepted that his words were inappropriate and has apologized. He remains in post as parish priest."
Father Thomas McHale apologized for his Good Friday sermon and acknowledged that his remarks were improper.
