According to news sources, a group of Canadian lawmakers from the ruling Liberal Party are heaping pressure on Justin Trudeau to resign. According to sources close to the matter, frustration has reached a tipping point following recent byelection failures in Toronto and Montreal, resulting in a series of private meetings among disgruntled MPs.
According to the CBC, at least 20 leaders have signed a letter advocating for a leadership change. Dissatisfaction has been brewing since the Liberal caucus' surprise loss in the Toronto-St. Paul's byelection in June. This turbulence accelerated with Parliament's return and worsened after the Montreal byelection loss.
The absence of Trudeau and his chief of staff, Katie Telford, from a recent summit in Asia allowed angry MPs to gather and strategise a way ahead.
An earlier piece on Friday in the Toronto Star described an effort to publicly urge Trudeau, 52, to resign, citing unidentified sources.
The publication said that "at least 30 to 40 MPs" are ready to sign a letter.
However, the number of disagreeing MPs listed in the reports may be insufficient to constitute a critical mass. The Liberal Party now possesses 153 seats in Canada's House of Commons.
By signing this document which the opposition leaders refer to as a pledge rather than a formal letter they hope to bind MPs to support Trudeau's resignation in the event that the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) reverts.
Moving too soon could cause the movement to fragment, as was shown following the Toronto byelection defeat, which emphasizes how urgent this endeavor is. "This is an insurance policy. We needed to act before the pressure from the PMO intensified."
Trade Minister Mary Ng, who is accompanying Trudeau on his return to Canada from Laos, said she was upset to learn about the MPs' plot but has complete faith in the prime minister, according to the Canadian Press.
In September, a parliamentary agreement with another party that had maintained Trudeau in power fell apart. Later that month, he withstood an attempt by the opposition Conservative Party to trigger an election.
