Máximo Napa, a 61-year-old Peruvian fisherman, has been rescued after drifting at sea for 95 days. Napa had originally stored food for only two weeks before a storm stuck him in the Pacific Ocean, Reuters reports.
To survive, Napa survived on birds, sea turtles, and even cockroaches. Yet, in the past 15 days, he had nothing to eat and endured extreme hunger. Despite the harsh environment, the image of his family, particularly his two-month-old granddaughter, encouraged him.
Upon being rescued, Napa joined his brother in Paita, a town along the border with Ecuador. "I did not want to die," Napa said. "I ate roaches and birds, the last thing I ate was turtles. I thought about my mother every day. I’m thankful to God for giving me a second chance," he told Reuters.
The Peruvian Navy provided information on Napa's rescue, indicating that after 90 days of searching, he was rescued by the Ecuadorian vessel 'Don F' and the Maritime Patrol BAP 'Rio Piura.' Napa was immediately given medical attention upon rescue.
Napa's mother also said her relief and thanks after her son's return. In an interview with TV Peru, she claimed, "I told the Lord, whether he’s alive or dead, just bring him back to me, even if it’s just to see him. But my daughters never lost faith. They kept telling me: Mom, he’ll come back, he’ll come back."
