Eight schoolgirls were seriously injured after jumping out of a first-floor classroom in fear. They thought the shaking and loud noises they felt were from an earthquake. This happened on Tuesday at the Government Girls High School in Jahanian, Khanewal district, which is about 350 kilometres from Lahore.
Girls panic after feeling tremors from road roller
According to Rescue 1122, the girls, aged between 12 and 14, were in class when they felt strong tremors and heard a loud noise caused by a road roller working nearby. The sound and vibrations made the students panic. With no teacher present at the time, the girls believed an earthquake was happening, and they feared the roof of their classroom would collapse.
In the confusion, many students ran downstairs, but eight girls jumped out of the first-floor window. The injured girls were taken to a hospital, and three of them were in critical condition.
One of the injured, Laiba Kulsoom, recalled the moment in the hospital. "There were around 20 of us in the classroom when we felt the tremors and heard the loud noise. We thought it was an earthquake and that the roof might cave in. In the panic, I saw some girls jumping out of the window, and I followed them," she said.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has expressed concern over the incident and has instructed health authorities to provide the best medical care to the injured students.
