More than 10 people, including nine children, were killed after Pakistan carried out air strikes in Afghanistan overnight, according to the Taliban government. The incident happened late-night on Tuesday (November 25). Four other civilians were injured in the attack, which targeted border areas in Kunar and Paktika provinces of Afghanistan.
Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid shared the information on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote that around midnight, Pakistani forces bombed the house of a local resident in the Mughalgay area of Gerbaz district in Khost province. Because of the bombing, nine children, five boys and four girls, and one woman lost their lives. The injured people were taken to hospitals for treatment.
This attack came just one day after a suicide bomber exploded himself in Pakistan’s city of Peshawar, near the border with Afghanistan. The blast took place at the headquarters of the Federal Constabulary (FC), a security force that helps maintain law and order. The office is located in a crowded area close to a military zone.
At least three people were killed and many others were injured in the explosion. So far, no group has said that they carried out the attack, but Pakistani officials have blamed the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). They accuse TTP militants of hiding and operating from inside Afghanistan.
Earlier in November, another suicide bombing happened in Islamabad, killing 12 people. That attack was claimed by a group linked to the Pakistan Taliban. The Pakistan Taliban shares close ideological ties with the Afghan Taliban, but the Afghan Taliban denies giving them support.
Relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan have become very tense since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021. The two countries have repeatedly accused each other of supporting terrorism. In October this year, heavy clashes took place along the border, killing around 70 people from both sides.
A temporary ceasefire was arranged by Qatar and Turkey, and talks were held in Istanbul. However, the peace talks did not succeed, and both nations continue to blame each other for attacks and for giving shelter to militants. The situation has created fear among people living near the border, who worry that more violence could happen soon. The international community has asked both countries to reduce tensions and work towards peace.
