Delhi residents worked the longest in 2024 among all other regions, data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation shows.

According to the figures, a worker in Delhi worked 571 minutes per day, or close to 9.5 hours, including travel time to work. This is in comparison to 455 minutes, or roughly 7.5 hours, as the national average.

Other such states as Haryana (493 minutes) and Tamil Nadu (484 minutes) also consumed more time in employment and similar activities. In contrast, citizens of Odisha, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan consumed around 7 hours per day on work.

More affluent per capita income states, such as Delhi, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, and Goa, were some of the states that were spending more time working.

Rajasthan leads in socialising, Tamil Nadu contributes the least time

Rajasthan spent the maximum amount of time socialising, attending religious ceremonies, or undertaking community service, putting in 148 minutes every day. That's above the countrywide average of 129 minutes. Comparatively, people of Tamil Nadu spent just 106 minutes socialising.

Haryana loves leisure, Gujarat doesn't

Leisure time saw Haryana topping the list again with 199 minutes a day spent on sports, cultural pursuits, and entertainment compared to any other big state. Gujarat clocked only 163 minutes, 13 minutes short of the all-India average of 176 minutes.

Learning and household work

Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh took the longest time studying — more than 475 minutes a day, while Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan took the shortest — less than 390 minutes. Tamil Nadu also took the shortest time performing unpaid household work.

The information also shared that men spent more time leisure-wise in the majority of states, but in Delhi, females spent 15% more time on leisure compared to men. In Jharkhand, men used 21% more leisure time, but women were involved more in unpaid domestic work.

The largest gender gap at work was recorded in Uttar Pradesh, where women devoted 72% less time to work compared to men. Bihar came a close second with a gap of 71.6%.

However, Delhi and Kerala were more equal in how men and women spent their time.
