Bengaluru police have arrested a shopkeeper and his assistant for assaulting a woman in broad daylight on Sunday, after she allegedly stole sarees worth Rs 90,000. A video of the incident, recorded on CCTV and by bystanders, has gone viral on social media.
The woman, identified as Humpamma, first visited the shop on Avenue Road and reportedly stole a bundle of sarees. She managed to escape, but the act was caught on the shop’s CCTV cameras.
Footage shows Humpamma standing inside the shop, repeatedly trying to take a bundle of sarees. After several attempts, she leaves the shop with the packed sarees.
According to police, the woman returned later to allegedly steal more sarees. This time, the shopkeeper recognised her and caught her red-handed. In anger, he dragged her onto the road and slapped and kicked her repeatedly before handing her over to the authorities.
The incident was also recorded by nearby locals and other shopkeepers.
Bengaluru police have registered two separate cases: one against the woman for theft and another against the shopkeeper and his assistant for assault.
