While most people at 84 are relaxing and enjoying retirement, Dr. Girish Mohan Gupta is doing something very different. He just earned an MBA degree from IIM-Sambalpur and is now preparing to start a PhD in management.

“There is no age limit for learning,” said Dr. Gupta after receiving his degree from the top business school last week.

Dr. Gupta joined the MBA for Working Professionals programme and managed to balance weekend classes with his work life. He finished with a CGPA of 7.4 and stood out as one of the most consistent performers in his batch.

“As long as you are curious and willing, every day becomes a new opportunity,” he said.

He shared that regular swimming, playing badminton, and staying fit are important to him. “I never let age come between me and my curiosity… Fitness and learning are constants in my life,” he added.

Dr. Gupta was born in Shahjahanpur, a small town in Uttar Pradesh, before India became independent. After studying mechanical engineering at Aligarh Muslim University, he joined the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), one of India’s most important nuclear research organizations.

He worked on special projects involving fast breeder reactors, a sensitive and complex area of nuclear energy.

“During one of my earliest assignments at BARC, I was tasked with designing sodium-based equipment for breeder reactors. We had to innovate with limited resources, and the spirit of ‘Make in India’ was very much alive even then,” he recalled.

After retiring from nuclear research, Dr. Gupta moved into industrial innovation. Now, with an MBA in hand, he is ready for yet another chapter in life — earning a PhD. His story shows that with passion, curiosity, and discipline, learning truly never stops.
