After responding to Elon Musk’s offer to buy OpenAI, CEO Sam Altman has now commented on Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta. Reports say Meta is planning to launch a separate app for Meta AI, which could compete with the ChatGPT app.
As soon as the news came out, Altman posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating that OpenAI might create its social media platform. He hinted that if Facebook is stepping into OpenAI’s space, OpenAI might do the same in return.
Altman responded to CNBC’s report on the Meta AI app by resharing it with a playful remark, "Ok fine, maybe we’ll do a social app."He later joked about the situation, saying, "If Facebook tries to come at us, we just Uno reverse them."
Meta is also planning to launch separate apps for certain features. Recently, Instagram head Adam Mosseri discussed with staff the idea of creating a standalone app for Reels, Instagram's short-form video feature. This move aims to capitalize on the uncertainty surrounding TikTok's presence in the United States by offering a similar video-scrolling experience.
Meta Platforms plans to launch a standalone Meta AI app in the second quarter of 2025, aiming to enhance user interaction with deeper personalization and integration across devices. This move is part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg's strategy to position Meta as a leader in artificial intelligence, competing with companies like OpenAI and Alphabet.
Currently, Meta AI is accessible through Meta's platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. The new app will offer users a dedicated experience, potentially including a paid subscription model similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT Plus.
In a related development, Elon Musk and a group of investors recently offered $97.4 billion to acquire OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT. OpenAI's board of directors unanimously rejected the proposal. CEO Sam Altman responded to Musk's bid on X (formerly Twitter) with a lighthearted remark, stating, "No thank you, but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want."
