Meta Platforms has introduced the ability to create a group on WhatsApp without creating a name for it. It has come up with a solution for people who want to create a group but cannot think of a name for the same. The tech giant is bringing in a new feature for their flagship instant messaging service, allowing its users to name their group after its members.

Now, Meta Platforms has introduced a new feature that allows you to name your group after its members. This means that if you create a group with your friends John, Jane, and Peter, the group will automatically be named "John, Jane, and Peter."

This new feature is a great way to save time and effort when creating a WhatsApp group. It's also a more personal way to name your group, as it reflects the actual people who are in it.

To use this new feature, simply create a new WhatsApp group and then tap on the "Name" field. Instead of typing in a name, simply tap on the "Members" button. This will bring up a list of the members of your group. Tap on the checkbox next to each member that you want to include in the group name. Once you've selected all of the members, tap on the "Done" button. The group name will automatically be populated with the names of the members that you selected.

This new feature was announced by Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg who took to both Facebook and Instagram – like WhatsApp, both platforms have Meta as their parent company – to share the news. Zuckerberg wrote, “Making it simpler to start groups by naming them based on who's in the chat when you don't feel like coming up with another name”.

Earlier, while setting up a group, users were required to specify its name in the beginning itself.

Details of the new feature

  1. According to TechCrunch, which cited a confirmation to it from WhatsApp, there can be a maximum of only 6 members in such groups whereas on the other hand, a regular one has up to 1024 participants.
  2. For each participant, the group name will appear differently, depending on the name they have given to the contact, whose number has been used in the name, on their phone. If, however, that number is not saved in contacts, the number (and not the contact's name) will appear in the group name.
  3. While Zuckerberg did not specify any timeframe for the feature's launch, TechCrunch noted that the update will be rolled out globally over the upcoming few weeks.

Recent HD image launch on WhatsApp

The Meta-owned messaging app had recently announced that it is allowing users to exchange pictures in higher-quality "HD" format on WhatsApp. This essentially meant that the images sent via WhatsApp would now retain quality and won't be as compressed as before. Meta CEO Zuckerberg had announced that the users could now send photos on WhatsApp in HD quality. The feature has already been rolled out for all users globally and is likely to reach every user in the coming days.

With this feature, higher-resolution images, which would still be quite compressed from their original size, would be made available on Android and iOS devices and also for the web client. Videos shared through WhatsApp have not got this ability yet and Meta said support for HD videos is also coming soon.

According to screenshots posted by WhatsApp beta updates tracking website WABetaInfo, users who get this new feature could see an “HD” gear icon on the top when they add a picture to a message thread.
