Meta said on Thursday that it fired 20 workers for leaking information to the media. The company is under pressure because its boss, Mark Zuckerberg, has recently shown support for US President Donald Trump. A Meta spokesperson explained that all employees are told from the start and reminded often that sharing internal information is against company rules. The spokesperson added that their investigation found around 20 employees who shared secret information, and more could be fired.
"We take this very seriously and will keep acting against leaks," said a Meta spokesperson.
The firings happened after several reports about Zuckerberg's meetings with employees. In one meeting, as reported by The Verge, Zuckerberg told his team that he would stop sharing too much information because it always leaks, which he said is very frustrating.
He also told them to get ready for a busy year ahead and said that Meta would work well with the White House. Many tech leaders have been supporting Trump since he won the election in November, and Zuckerberg has become especially close to Republicans since returning to work.
Zuckerberg has taken more steps to get closer to Trump. Last summer, Trump threatened to send Zuckerberg to life in prison after Meta removed him from Facebook in January 2021 for encouraging an attack on the Capitol.
Since then, Zuckerberg has met with Trump several times, dined with him, donated to Trump’s inauguration fund, relaxed content rules, and ended Facebook’s fact-checking in the US to please the new Republican leaders in Washington.
He also replaced his long-time political affairs head with a prominent Republican and added Trump supporter Dana White to his board after the US election. These moves match the conservative views of Trump and his supporters, as well as those of well-known figures like Elon Musk.
On the Joe Rogan podcast, Zuckerberg complained that many companies are too soft and said that embracing a strong, masculine energy is a good thing.
