Is Apple working on triple-folding iPhones? here’s what the patent suggests

Apple's updated patent hints at a tri-fold iPhone design, featuring an outer display and touch sensors. While exciting, its launch date remains uncertain.

Apple has long been the subject of speculation regarding triple-folding iPhones. While multiple patent applications have hinted at this development, an official launch date remains uncertain. However, recent news coming out of the tech titan indicates that triple-folding iPhones may not only be closer to reality than one would have ever imagined but also to be introduced with numerous features which have not yet been seen on any device.

Updated patent indicates advanced features

The latest patent application, filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) under application number 20240310942 and titled “Electronic Devices With Display And Touch Sensor Structures,” showcases significant enhancements to the original design. Where the initial design was related to touch sensor structures integrated into the display, Apple has widened the ambit of the patent not just for introducing new features but to transform the smartphone experience altogether.

One of the most notable changes is the incorporation of an “outer display” alongside a larger internal display. Indeed, this new framework hints at a three-fold design, or a three-foldable iPhone. In illustrations published in the patent, the design appears similar to the Huawei Mate XT’s: When folded, the middle sheet remains invisible; only showing from top and bottom. Unlike foldable smartphones on the market today, the outer screen is visible in either the folded or unfolded position.

Touch sensor innovations

In addition to the new display configurations, the patent outlines the inclusion of touch sensor structures on each display “wall.” Each screen will be able to read and process touch input independently. This indicates a hinge design might make it easier for users to interact with the middle display independently, enhancing functionality.

What does the design look like?

While these advancements are exciting, it is important to note that this remains a patent application. Even if granted, it does not guarantee that Apple is poised to launch a tri-fold iPhone in the immediate future. In a related report, it was suggested that Apple might introduce a clamshell-style foldable with the iPhone 18 series. This device is expected to blend features of both the iPad and MacBook, boasting an impressive 18.8-inch display when fully opened.

While Apple continues to redefine its vision on foldable smartphones, tech enthusiasts eagerly await the potential innovations that may emerge from these developments.
